Rhythmic Development Drills

Rhythm is the organization of sound in time. To practice it effectively, you need more than just one-colored clicks.

Try these rhythmic development drills:

  • Subdivision Switching: Set the metronome to 60 BPM. Play 4 notes per beat (16ths), then 3 (triplets), then 2 (8ths) without stopping.
  • Polyrhythm Basics: Learn to feel 3-against-2 or 4-against-3 by using subdivisions on the metronome.
  • Syncopation: Practice playing on the "upbeats" (the 'and' of the beat) while the metronome clicks on the downbeats.
