Internalizing the Pulse

Keeping time is the most important job of any musician. If the rhythm is wrong, the music won't "breathe" correctly. Here is how to keep better time:

  • Use Your Body: Tap your foot, nod your head, or sway. Physical movement helps translate the clinical click into a musical groove.
  • Sing Your Parts: If you can't sing it in time, you can't play it in time. Sing your rhythm along with the metronome.
  • Record Yourself: Listen back to your practice sessions with the metronome. You'll often find you rush during fills and drag during difficult transitions.
